ToDo ToDay: Carrie the Musical, Avers, and Chaplin-Themed Cocktails
You’ve probably heard of Carrie, Stephen King’s heroine immortalized on screen by Sissy Spacek. But have you heard her sing? Maybe not—the Broadway musical adaptation of the story famously flopped when it opened in 1988. Studio Theatre’s adaptation of Carrie: The Musical follows the narrative we’ve all come to know—bullied teen, zealous mother, psychic powers, worst prom ever—but features an all-new contemporary rock score fit for a chamber musical that ends in buckets of blood. Read more >>> The musical runs July 9 to August 3 at Studio Theatre, 1501 14th St. NW. $20–$45. (202) 332-3300. studiotheatre.org. (Tim Regan)
Chaplin Cocktail Bar, the Charlie Chaplin-inspired spot replacing Mandalay in Shaw, officially opens today from bartender brothers Ari and Micah Wilder. The place will have a number of cocktails named after Chaplin’s comedic films, including one gin and blackberry concoction (which will debut later) carbonated with helium and carbon dioxide that will supposedly alter your voice when you drink it. The Asian-inspired menu is meant to “take diners on a journey to Japan and Shanghai in the 1920s” when muted films were big. Chef Jeremy Cooke is preparing handmade noodles, dumplings, ramen, and family-style roasts. Read more about Chaplin Cocktail Bar on Young & Hungry. Chaplin Cocktail Bar, 1501 9th St. NW.
