ToDo ToDay: “Speculative Forms,” the New Retro, and Wreckless Eric

Speculative_FormsObserving sculpture poses a corporal challenge for clumsy people like me who may venture a little too close to the exhibited art. The Hirshhorn’s latest exhibition, "Speculative Forms," explores the history of 20th century sculpture—but it tosses out standard descriptors like “figurative” versus “abstract” and “still” versus “kinetic,” instead highlighting pieces that exist between those extremes. And while modernist scholars push for art to exist in isolation from its surroundings, the Hirshhorn’s curators believe that the viewer’s eyes and body form important connections with the work. Shake Shack opens its fourth D.C. location today inside Union Station. In addition to the usual ShackBurgers and flat-top hot dogs, the burger joint has some location-specific frozen custard concretes featuring ingredients from local bakers. College Park hip-hop outfit the New Retro performs at Rock & Roll Hotel with L.A.-based psych rock project Modern Pantheist and Maryland lyricist Cawl Sted. 8 p.m. at 1353 H St. NE. $12.

The Guantánamo Public Memory Project, a photo exhibit highlighting the changing role of the U.S. naval base in Cuba, stops at the Rayburn House Office Building for one day only. At a reception tonight, officials and reporters will discuss the future of Guantánamo with a former prisoner. 6 p.m. at Independence Avenue and First Street SW. Free.
