Listen: Dunson “4 Leaf Clover”

Maryland rapper Dunson released "4 Leaf Clover" earlier this week, a heartfelt tribute to his older 4leafcloversister disguised as an obvious nod to St. Patrick’s Day. Over simple beatboxing and a sample of Erykah Badu’s "4 Leaf Clover" (itself an interpretation of Atlantic Starr’s "Touch a Four Leaf Clover"), Dunson thanks his sister for being an early musical inspiration and keeping him out of trouble: "You taught me how to beatbox in the back seat/On the way home from Nana’s, on them back streets/That was Capitol Heights, that was Capitol Heights/Now I get my capital from tracks and rappin’ on mics."

The self-produced song’s stripped-down composition adds to its extremely personal nature, allowing listeners to focus on the honesty and genuine gratitude in Dunson’s words. By the time the faint piano keys arrive just after the two-minute mark, you’re almost drowning in emotional overload. His next project, Outlier, is due out this spring.
