ToDo ToDay: VelocityDC, Obits, and The Bentzen Ball

velocityNew York’s annual 10-day-long dance blitz is called Fall for Dance. In D.C., the same concept, packed into just three days with 30 local companies, is known as VelocityDC. On opening night, you’ll see more or less traditional work from the Washington Ballet’s studio company and Edwin Aparicio’s flamenco troupe. But the event’s emerging performers seem more intriguing: Airborne!DC, an aerial acrobatic ensemble, brings clowning and dance techniques to the air above the Harman Hall stage, and Reston’s Gin Dance Company, which unfortunately has no connection to tonic and limes, performs works influenced by ballet, modern, and traditional Taiwanese dance. Ben Crosbie and Tessa Moran's new film, Fate of a Salesman, premieres tonight at Atlas Performing Arts Center. Before the screening, check out Andrew Lapin's review of the documentary. 7 p.m. at 1333 H St. NE. Free.

Hip-hop group Deltron 3030 performs at the Howard Theatre along with Itch. 9 p.m. at 620 T St. NW. $30.

Surf-punk quartet Obits takes the stage at Rock & Roll Hotel. Title Tracks, Cane & the Sticks, and Mary Timony's new group, Ex Hex also perform. 8 p.m. at 1353 H St. NE. $12.
