ToDo ToDay: Michael Mayer! Pi Day!
UPDATE: Due to medical issues, Michael Mayer's performance at U Street Music Hall has been canceled. Huxley, Beautiful Swimmers, and Brian Billion will perform instead.
Michael Mayer has been embedded in Cologne’s electronic-music scene for the better part of 20 years, helping shape one of Germany’s most influential record labels, Kompakt. Yet he hasn’t given as much thought to his own personal “brand;” he’s only got two solo albums to his credit, and if you asked him, he’d probably say he’s only released one. That’s because he considers last year’s Mantasy the first proper Michael Mayer album. It touches on slinky ambiance, pop, and quirky house—with a brief foray into brass—and finally throws a scrap of meat to the dance floor, but not until the very end. Like always, Michael Mayer makes it worth the wait. Read more>>> Michael Mayer DJs with Huxley and Brian Billion at 10 p.m. at U Street Music Hall, 1115 U St. NW. $10. Free before 11 p.m. for 21-plus. (202) 588-1880. ustreetmusichall.com. (Ally Schweitzer)
If you're into math, Pi Day is worth celebrating—with food. District of Pi in Chinatown will have a pi-memorization contest at 6 p.m. The person who can spout off the most numbers will receive a $100 gift card. The restaurant will also have a special on large pizzas: buy one, get one (of equal or lesser value) for $3.14. Meanwhile, Dangerously Delicious Pies on H Street NE will have its yearly Pi Happy Hour from 5 to 7 p.m. with slices for $3.14 (normally $7). District of Pi, 910 F St. NW. (202) 393-5484. pi-dc.com.
