Lincoln Theatre Community Meeting Planned for Next Week
D.C.'s Commission on the Arts and Humanities announced last week that it will host a public meeting on Feb. 26 for local residents who wish to discuss the future of the underutilized Lincoln Theatre.
A press release about the meeting says the discussion "will help drive the process of selecting an operator to manage the theatre." The facilitated discussion was originally planned to be held at DCCAH headquarters at 200 I St. SE, but lucky for U Street area residents, the commission chose to relocate the meeting to the Lincoln Theatre.
The historic U Street venue has been under the city agency's oversight since the beginning of 2012, and it's been up for lease since December, when DCCAH determined that its previous search for a theater operator wasn't going anywhere. Prior to 2012, the nonprofit U Street Theatre Foundation oversaw the Lincoln, but struggled to keep it fully operational. Since the arts commission took over, it's hosted occasional events—including a Rare Essence show and documentary screening this coming Friday—but the theater still remains closed to the public most days of the week.
The community forum will be held Tuesday, Feb. 26, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. If you'd like to attend, you may register at the meeting's Eventbrite page.
