ToDo ToDay: Libraries for All! DGS Happy Hour! George Clinton!
After spending much of the 1990s working as a Microsoft corporate executive, John Wood decided to take a vacation and trek through the Himalayas. When he visited a school in Nepal and saw that it was lacking books for its students, he found a new calling and later returned to the school with a donation of 3,000 books. Since officially launching his charity, Room to Read, in 2001, more than 11 million books have been distributed to schools around the world. He'll discuss his work and sign copies of his new book, Creating Room to Read: A Story of Hope in the Battle for Global Literacy, tonight at MLK Library. 7 p.m. at Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library, 901 G St. NW. Free.
DGS Delicatessen in Dupont debuts a new happy hour and bar menu today with a variety of "noshes," including pastrami chili and cheese fries, a smoked salmon tartare with "everything" aioli and bagel crunchies, and mini grilled tongue reubens. (Prices range from $4 to $6.) There will also specials on beer, wines by the glass, and cocktails like the Meyer Lansky Sour—an ode to Jewish gangster Meyer Lanksy. The happy hour menu will be available at the bar only between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. DGS Delicatessen, 1317 Connecticut Ave. NW. (202) 293-4400. dgsdelicatessen.com. (May Wildman)
