ToDo ToDay: Steven Cushner! Tropical Lunches!

Wasn’t Steven Cushner just here? It was only six months ago that the Washington-based painter mounted his most recent show at Hemphill Fine Arts.  With “The Shaped Paintings, 1991–93,” Cushner returns with a series of deep cuts from his own extensive painting catalog.  Twenty years later, Cushner’s work on nonrectilinear canvases  still needs time—but then, his paintings have always demanded first, second, and third looks from viewers.  Read more >>> The exhibit is on display 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays-Saturdays to March 9 at Hemphill Fine Arts, 1515 14th St. NW. Free. (202) 234-5601. hemphillfinearts.com. (Kriston Capps)

EAT THIS

This dreary gray weather has us dreaming of white-sand beaches and palm trees. The next best thing might be Ris' new "Tropical Escape" lunch menu, which debuts this week. To start, there's tom kha gai, a Thai chicken lime and coconut soup or chef Ris Lacoste's famous scallop margarita made with lime-marinated scallops, chilies, orange segments, avocado, and tequila ice. Entrees include a choice of Jamaican goat curry or macadamia-crusted mahi mahi. Finish the meal off with toasted coconut frozen yogurt or pineapple upside-down cake. The three-course meal is $25 and available from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Ris, 2275 L St. NW; (202) 730-2500; risdc.com. (Jessica Sidman)
