Memorial to Be Held Saturday for “Uptown” Janice Brown

Janice BrownThe death in August of singer "Uptown" Janice Brown—aka journalist, educator, and broadcaster Janice Frink Brown—has left a lot of grief in the D.C. jazz community. Brown's family and close friends are giving her fans and supporters an outlet to mourn this weekend with a large-scale memorial service at the Duke Ellington School of the Arts.

The program, however, will be quite a celebratory one, according to Brown's daughter Whitney Leigh Brown, a dancer in New York. It will include a musical performance from some of Brown's colleagues; tributes from her friends; poetry readings; and a dedicatory dance from Whitney Brown. In addition, Vicino's Ristorante Italiano in Silver Spring—where Brown most frequently performed—will unveil a plaque that dedicates the month of August as Janice Brown Jazz and Blues Month "for eternity," says Brown.

Also planned for the service are a number of special tributes that have not been announced, says family spokesperson Carl DeShazior.

Janice Brown's memorial service will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Duke Ellington School of the Arts, 3500 R St. NW. All are encouraged to attend–and are asked to wear "a touch of red," Brown's signature color, to the service.
