ToDo ToDay: “Atmospheric Front” at Flashpoint
For a region so recently shaken by a derecho , an exhibit titled “Atmospheric Front” sounds ominous. The installation at Flashpoint isn’t so scary, but it doesn’t quite live up to its potential. In their first artistic collaboration, two sisters from Northern Virginia, Hana and Shana Kim, suspend cotton twine from the gallery’s ceiling using wires attached to a series of pulleys and motion sensors, so that the weblike forms shift and morph when a visitor walks by. Ris chef/owner Ris Lacoste is paying tribute to Julia Child, who would have celebrated her 100th birthday this month, with a special menu and film event. Lacoste helped prepare dinner for Child's 90th birthday at Georgetown's 1789 Restaurant. That dinner is chronicled in the PBS documentary Cooking for Julia, which will screen at 6, 7, and 8 p.m. tonight at West End Cinema. Lacoste will be on hand for a Q&A session following each show. Stop by Ris before or after the film for the restaurant's Tuesday deal: a glass of Malbec wine and a burger with Child's favorite toppings for $17. Ris is celebrating "All Things Julia" all month long with a special menu featuring more of the cooking icon's favorite recipes. Ris, 2275 L St. NW; (202) 730-2500;risdc.com. (Jessica Sidman)
