ToDo ToDay: Steampunk Jazz
One of the most buzzed-about big bands in an era where “buzzed-about big bands” largely don’t exist, Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society is remolding orchestral jazz for rock- and post-rock-trained ears. Argue's recent concert-scale project, “Brooklyn Babylon,” is a multimedia smorgasbord—just right for the landmark of the new H Street NE. The show takes place tonight at 8 p.m. Atlas Performing Arts Center, 1333 H St. NE. (202) 399-7993. $15-$25. (Michael J. West)
Local outfit The Beanstalk Library places classicist pop-rock—your power-pop, your British Invasion—in an indie-folk cast. They share a bill with The Color Bars and Archivists at 8 p.m. at Black Cat Backstage, 1811 14th St. NW. $10. (202) 667-7960.
Local music blog All Things Go and New York label Neon Gold host their latest All Things Gold (get it?) showcase. This one stars Yuksek, the French electronic producer who sometimes blends shouty indie pop and Phoenix-style gloss. This might get precious. At 8 p.m. at U Street Music Hall, 1115 U St. NW. $12-$15. (202) 588-1880.
William Pope.L, the American performance artist, recently appeared in the Corcoran's 30 Americans; in his video work, he crawled from the Statue of Liberty to the Bronx wearing a Superman costume. He speaks at 6 p.m. tonight at the Phillips Collection, 1600 21st St. $10 if you're not a member; RSVP here. (202) 387-2151.
