Don’t Be Bored: Do Valentine’s Day Creatively

It’s the 165th birthday of suffragette Anna Howard Shaw—oh, and Valentine’s Day. How to dodge the stuffed bears and wait lines? Try the coping-mechanisms-in-a-glass on Bar Pilar’s anti-Valentine’s Day menu. The recently reopened tavern—not serving food at the moment—is offering up a slate of decidedly unromantic $10 cocktails dashed with—what else—bitters, of Jonathan Fain’s homemade variety. Try “Hemingway’s Ex-Wife,” concocted with rum, cherry bitters, ginger beer, and lime, and when you’re sloshed and weepy, you have no excuse to not indulge in the bar’s Bittersweet Chocolate Terrine with burnt orange Sabayon and Maldon salt ($7). Meanwhile, next door at Source, Washington Improv Theater presents “Love Bites,” a show that promises to “rip love a new one.” But what’s out there for the comfortably attached? Try the suburbs: AFI Silver Theatre’s “Screen Valentines” marathon might be the ticket for a casual date. It’s a celebration of great screen romances from the last 10 decades; tonight, the theater shows The Lady Eve with choice vintage lovebirds Barbara Stanwyck and Henry Fonda. And for the more adventerous? Beginning Wednesday, Secret Pleasures Boutique is holding a (fairly self-explanatory) “Creative Romance” contest. Submit a detailed written description of your Valentine’s Day escapades and win a $250 or $25 gift card. Salacious photos and videos accepted. (Rachel Calvert)
