Don’t Be Bored: Bossalingo Beyond

Local outfit Bossalingo earned a following with its Monday night gigs at the Chi Cha Lounge from 1998 to 2005, but after that run ended, its members pursued other projects. Now, with a new album, Steps Beyond, bandleader and guitarist Michael Joseph Harris is working on re-establishing Bossalingo’s name. Inspired by the jazz-samba style of D.C. guitarist Charlie Byrd—as well as O’Farrill and The Latin-Jazz Allstars—the group dispenses Harris originals as well as mellow, rhythmic covers, from Thelonious Monk to The Beatles to Antonio Carlos Jobim. On Steps Beyond, “Sandunga” shines with West African-style drumming, and Harris’ arrangement of “Pure Imagination” (from Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory) incorporates the Cuban clave rhythm. Tonight, two sets of percussionists and bassists will rotate, and New York Afro-Cuban pianist Arturo O’Farrill will amp up the energy with his brash keyboard rhythms. 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. at Blues Alley. $18. (202) 337-4141. (Steve Kiviat)

BOOKS

Man, these PEN/Faulkner-sponsored readings have been pretty strong lately, huh? The events pair two authors—usually with an obvious connection, although the best I can come up with for tonight's authors is that Chris Adrian and Emme Donoghue both sometimes place very realistic characters in batshit-crazy situations. At 7:30 p.m. at Folger Elizabethan Theatre. $15.

ART

FotoWeek continues: In addition to the host of ongoing exhibitions, National Geographic photographers David Doubilet and Ira Block are speaking at Artisphere at 7 p.m. $15.

MUSIC

Local instrumental trio Sansyouwhich did a nice interview with DCist last week—is celebrating the release of its new full-length alongside fellow experimentalists Janel + Anthony. Cheap and thought-provoking! 9 p.m. at Galaxy Hut. $5.

THEATER

At Round House Silver Spring, Forum Theatre is putting on a one-night-only staged reading of The Normal Heart, Larry Kramer's 1985 play about the early years of the HIV/AIDS crisis in New York City. 7:30 p.m. $75-$100.
