Those interested in exhibits on subjects ranging from medicine during the Civil War to the microscope’s evolution should hurry up and head to the Walter Reed Medical Center before April 3, when the exhibits are scheduled to close.

The National Museum of Health and Medicine, currently housed on the Walter Reed campus, is closing its doors as part of its move to a new location at the Forest Glen Annex in Silver Spring, according to a press release.

Created in 1862, the National Museum of Health and Medicine “identifies, collects, and preserves important and unique resources to support a broad agenda of innovative exhibits, educational programs, and scientific, historical, and medical research.”

Past exhibits at the museum have included “Wounded in Action,” featuring art depicting the role orthopedic surgeons play in the recovery of veterans and civilians during armed conflict; an exhibit on the Spanish-American War; and one looking at the history of editorial cartoons about smoking.

The museum plans to complete its relocation this summer, and plans to reopen in the fall.
