Don’t Have New Year’s Eve Plans? Don’t Despair

District natives The Walkmen are playing a New Year's Eve set at the Westin

So, for the second time today, I'm referencing Michael J. West on the blog. In his Jazz Setlist post, he writes, "[I]f you're still looking for something to do that night, you're in trouble. Everything that's not sold out is ridiculously high-priced (which is why it's not sold out)." Well, I've gotta disagree. As the person who compiled upwards of 50 New Year's Eve listings for our print edition, I know there are plenty of options still available–and not all of which will bust your bank account.

  • If you want to toast the new year with beer instead of champagne, head over to R.F.D. They're offering a $15 buffet from 8 to 10 p.m., as well as numerous beer specials–including lots of $5 drafts. And if you're feeling indecisive right up 'til the last minute, don't sweat it–no tickets or reservations are required.
  • If you missed The Walkmen's sold-out show at the 9:30 Club earlier this month and you're still kicking yourself, you've got another chance to see them. The D.C. ex-pats are back in town, this time at the Westin Hotel. For $120, you also get an open bar and a midnight champagne toast, not to mention additional performances by the Kirk McEwen Band and Midnight Spin. This one doesn't fall into the budget-friendly category, but some would argue you can't put a price on a good time.
  • Not really into the sentimentality of "Auld Lang Syne" on New Year's Eve? Spend the night taking in Second City's irreverent brand of humor at Woolly Mammoth, with A Girl's Guide to Washington Politics. Tickets start at $65–a not too-outrageous $35 over normal going-rate–and include hors d'œuvres, a midnight champagne toast, and an always fun photo booth.
  • What better way to cap off the indulgence of the holiday season than with rodizio? If you're up for making the trek out to Tyson's Corner, head over to Chima Brazilian Steakhouse for all-you-can-eat steak and sides–for a refreshingly non-marked-up price of $46.50.
