Silverdocs Expands Into D.C., Changes Name to AFI Docs

"AFI Docs presented by Audi." That's the new name of the American Film Institute's annual documentary festival, Silverdocs.

In its 11th edition, the festival will expand beyond its home base at the AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center and move into "iconic venues on the National Mall and in the Penn Quarter area," according to a press release. The Washington Post's Ann Hornaday reports that some of those venues include the National Portrait Gallery and the National Museum of American History. Films will still be shown at the Silver Spring complex.

Hornaday reports that Silverdocs' new sponsorship became necessary as Discovery, one of the event's original partners, dialed back its support for the festival in recent years.

Organizers have planned talks called "AFI Catalyst Sessions: The Art of Moving Reality," described as "a forum for national conversations by filmmakers, thought leaders, policy-makers and engaged audiences." No details about speakers or locations have been released yet.

Silverdocs runs June 19-23 this year. Passes go on sale April 19 at afidocs.com.
