This Could Be Funny: Wang, Nathan, Madrigal

Your next seven days should be filled with laughter. The following could help.

Friday, May 20: Cool Dudes Hanging Out at The Velvet Lounge
Quite possibly the best monthly comedy show in a legit venue, this installation of Cool Dudes has Taiwanese-Texan, San Francisco-formed, now-NYC-based Sheng Wang. He’s toured with the Comedians of Comedy (Patton Oswalt, Zach Galifianakis) and his first Comedy Central special aired earlier this year. A low cover with an up-and-comer on the alt scene and solid D.C. openers makes this an easy pick. 7 p.m., $5, 21+.

Saturday, May 21: Vijai Nathan’s “Woman on Top: Tips from Mom, Dad and COSMO” at Atlas Performing Arts Center
Following her successful 2010 Fringe Fest run, Nathan returns to the stage with “Woman on Top.” I’ll take any excuse to see comedians perform in a "real" theater, especially if they’re not on their first production. This is Nathan’s fourth. That means you don’t have to worry about some weird monologue featuring the music of Rush that ends with everyone feeling like they may have been touched at 8 years old. 8 p.m., $22, 16+.

Monday, May 23: The Garden Open Mic featuring Tyler Sonnichsen at BloomBars
This open mic is the first night of Tyler Sonnichsen’s tour. He aptly named it “Tyler's Poorly-Thought-Out 2011 Spring Comedy Tour.” I appreciate Tyler’s honesty. This first stop of the tour is a bad idea. It’s at an open mic that costs between $5 and $10 and doesn’t serve alcohol. I’m writing about this show because Tyler isn’t a bad comedian and this should qualify as paying dues. 8:30 p.m., $5-$10, all ages.

Thursday, May 26: Al Madrigal at DC Improv
A stand up and sitcom vet, Madrigal has fans in Conan and Craig Ferguson. What makes this show neat is that it’s part of the DC Improv’s “Pay What You Can Night.” Once a month the Improv is dropping its normal rates and two item minimum. Take advantage of this. 8 p.m., $15 or pay what you want, 21+.
