It’s kind of insane how much comics-related stuff is happening in town this month. Here’s a list of what’s on when, who’s appearing, and where to find it.
September 8-9: Baltimore Comic Con at the Baltimore Convention Center
This year the megaconvention features local cartoonists Matt Dembicki (whose anthology District Comics we feature on our cover this week), Marty Baumann, SL Gallant, Carolyn Belefski, Charlie McElvy, and the Team Cul de Sac fundraisers, as well as Stan Lee, Neal Adams, Brian Bolland, and other comic-book creators. $20-$40.
Sept. 13: “Ink and Pixel: A Cartoon View of Campaign 2012” at the Library of Congress Madison Building
Includes Lalo Alcaraz of Pocho.com, Steve Kelley of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, Ted Rall of the Los Angeles Times, and Scott Stantis of the Chicago Tribune. Noon, free.
Sept. 14-15: Damn Cartoons at George Washington University
Local editorial cartoonists Ann Telnaes, Tom Toles, Matt Wuerker, and dozens of other cartoonists convene at the first meeting of the American Association of Editorial Cartoonists that’s open to the general public. $10 per day. Order in advance.
Sept. 14 at 7 pm: Hernandez Brothers at Politics & Prose
The great alt cartoonists Jaime and Gilbert Hernandez will speak and sign their new anthology the night before the Small Press Expo begins. 7 p.m., free.
Sept. 15-16: Small Press Expo at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel & Conference Center
Local creators The DC Conspiracy creators, Carolyn Belefski, Rafer Roberts, Lost Art Books, Matt Dembicki, as well as Daniel Clowes, Chris Ware, and the Hernandez brothers. If you can only go to one event on this list, make it SPX. $10-$15.
Sept. 21-23: Intervention Con at the Hilton Washington D.C./Rockville
An “Internet Convention” that includes many web comics creators including local cartoonists Chris Flick, Greg Uchrin, MonMon, Dan Nokes, and Jennifer Zyren Smith. $45.
Sept. 22: Raina Telgemeier signing at Big Planet Comics
Telgemeier’s Smile was a smash hit New York Times bestseller, and her new comic Drama should likewise appeal to middle-school girls. 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Vienna location, 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. in College Park. Free.
Sept. 22-23: Library of Congress’ National Book Festival on the National Mall
Cartoonists at the National Book Festival! On tap: Raina Telgemeier, Hope Larson, David Small, Jeff Kinney, and Craig Thompson. Check the schedule for more information on times, dates, and locations of signings. Free.
Sept. 29: Gordon Harris signing at Big Planet Comics, Vienna
Annadale resident Harris will be signing Pedestrian, his first graphic novel. 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Free.
