We’ve already given you a few reasons to attend the Library of Congress’ National Book Festival this weekend. It’s also worth noting that the event has a strong selection of cartoonists scheduled to appear—-and for the first time ever, their own Graphic Novels tent.

Saturday

In the Children tent at 3:45 p.m., New Yorker and sydicated cartoonist Harry Bliss will introduce his new children’s book, Bailey; at 2:30 p.m. he’ll be signing copies. William Joyce is well-known for children’s books like George Shrinks and Meet the Robinsons, which have both seen animated adaptations. He’s worked on the films Toy Story, A Bug’s Life, and Robots. His new series is The Guardians of Childhood, and he’s signing the first book, The Man in the Moon, at 1:30 pm, and speaking from 4:40 to 5:25 p.m. Brian Selznick‘s books The Invention of Hugo Cabret and Wonderstruck are hard-to-categorize combinations of words and pictures, and he’s speaking at the Teens tent at 3:30 pm, and is signing from 2 to 3 p.m. Jon J Muth will sign his new children’s book Zen Ghosts at noon, having moved from adapting Fritz Lang movies to a more lucrative field. George O’Connor will be at the New York section of the Pavilion of the States signing his graphic novel, Journey Into Mohawk Country.

In the Graphic Novels tent, Arlington’s own Ruben Award winner, Cul de Sac creator Richard Thompson, is speaking at 1 p.m. and signing at 2:30 p.m. He’s followed at 1:55 p.m. by Kazu Kibuishi, the editor of the Flight anthologies, and the cartoonist behind the Copper Web comic. The latest book of his new series is Amulet #4: The Last Council. Japanese-born Allen Say apprenticed for his favorite cartoonist, Noro Shinpei, at age 12, and has been doing children’s books since the 1970s. He’ll be speaking at 2:50 and signing Drawing from Memory at 4 p.m. At 3:45 p.m., Rachel Renee Russell, the author of the Dork Diaries series, will speak, and is signing at 2 p.m. At 4:40 p.m., Eric Wight speals about his new series Frankie Pickle and the Mathematical Genius. He’s signing at 3 p.m, and will probably be glad to see copies of his first graphic novel, My Dead Girlfriend. Muth speaks at the children’s tent at 1 p.m., and signs his book at 2:30 p.m He also created the poster for the Festival.
