An agnostic is really an atheist that is ashamed to admit it. In this case I think the writer knows he's an atheist but is trying to fool his readers into thinking he is an objective thinker.

If agnostic, simply meaning that God exists but who could really know about him, it seems that you would show just a bit more fear, or even respect. For if the God you know so little about is actually engaged in how you speak of him, it might be something you might want to think out a bit more. If you are an atheist, or even a deist, your irreverence would be completely expected. I just usually expect more from agnostics, for if you really do not know who or what something is, it seems that you would exercise a bit more reluctance in how you interact or speak of them.
