Best Live Broadcast

Mike Coneen
As far as we know, no one ever pelted Walter Cronkite or Peter Jennings with snowballs during a live broadcast, so it’s difficult to say how the pillars of television journalism would have reacted to such a situation. It’s doubtful, though, that they could have performed better than ABC7 reporter Mike Conneen, who came under heavy fire during a live segment on snow sculptures in Dupont Circle in February. With dozens of snowballs fired at him from all angles for several minutes, Conneen managed to hurl a few back, issue some trash talk, and avoid injury—all while narrating the snow-sculpture contest. “We’ve seen some very creative sculptures out here,” Conneen reported, not missing a beat as he deflected the snowballs hurling toward his face.
