“Metro to Sex Creeps: Keep Off Trains, Buses.” The Washington Examiner headline was jarring, but not because of the actual news. Since when did D.C.’s dailies have funny headlines? The D.C. area holds its own against any other metropolis when it comes to political corruption and bizarre crimes, but what we didn’t have was a sleazy, titillating tabloid. Since 2005, the Examiner has tried its best to carry on the legacy of right-wing tabloid sensationalism. Unfortunately, its best wasn’t attractive enough to readers. Management announced in March that 87 employees would be laid off this summer as the paper transitions from a six-day-a-week schedule to a weekly political magazine. It’s a shame, but at least the field for Best Tabloid 2014 is wide open.
