When Nationals Stadium is quiet, summer festivals like Trillectro are a distant memory, and cold breezes batter the riverfront, the surrounding neighborhood still provides outdoor activity. The Canal Park ice rink, tucked behind broad-shouldered buildings on M Street SE only a few steps from the non-ballpark Metro entrance, is a surprisingly inviting spot. By comparison, the rink at the Smithsonian’s Sculpture Garden has limited options for food, and the ice in Georgetown is a hassle to get to. As a bonus: Canal Park—with its curvy ice paths overlooked by a pavilion designed by the architecture firm OLIN—feels like a cool little secret, too.
