D.C. United matches at RFK Stadium

There must have been a time when RFK Stadium was state-of-the-art for facilities of its kind: The wavy roof, so hip! The reconfigurable seats, suitable for baseball or football! These days, though, the seats don’t slide around anymore, chunks of concrete have been known to fall from the stadium during games, and one of the seats where I have season tickets for D.C. United seems to lose more bolts each time I go to the stadium. Major League Soccer is in its 18th season, and on the field, United is its most successful club, winning four championships, two Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cups, multiple Supporters Shields for the best regular-season record, a regional CONCACAF Champions Cup, and a hemisphere-wide InterAmerican Cup. But the team’s playing in the oldest stadium in use in the league, and it’s one of a dwindling number of clubs that don’t have a home that’s all their own. RFK has plenty of charm, but every now and then, a fan can dream of something nicer. In the case of United fans, “every now and then” works out to “just about every match.”
