Best Candidate for D.C. Council Chairman Pro Tempore, Self-Declared
The chairman pro tempore is the D.C. Council’s second-in-command, a meaningless position with no real power. Despite its uselessness, councilmembers are still sometimes eager to step over each other to win the crown. Last year, when the Council was trying to decide between Councilmembers Michael Brown and Vincent Orange for chairman pro tem, Orange made the most direct, straightforward (albeit unsuccessful) pitch for the position in the history of city politics. “I’m the best. I’m the best,” Orange said. “Today, Vincent Bernard Orange Senior is the best candidate for chairman pro tem. The best.” Is there any better way to advocate for yourself?
