Organized mass snowball fights
Social networking found a new application during D.C.’s recent historic winter weather: organizing snowball fights. During the first round of the region-crippling Snowpocalypse, in December, kids and adults alike broke free from their homes for some good, clean fun at 14th and U Streets NW. The mobilization of the masses came via frequent posts and alerts via Twitter and Facebook, and the event was well-covered by multiple local blogs. And though a plainclothes police officer brandished his service pistol at the revelry, that didn’t stop Washingtonians from reprising the scene when the city ground to a halt for a second time, in February. Once again, the enthusiasm escalated on the Internet before it hit the streets, and snowball fights in February spanned from Meridian Hill Park to Dupont Circle. The frenzy even included a showdown between George Washington and Georgetown universities.
