Best Flack

Best: Leah Gurowitz
2nd Best: Phyllis Jones
D.C. Superior Court spokesperson Leah Gurowitz retains her title from last year as best flack. Not only has she continued to provide data, files, and comfort to frantic reporters, but she’s played a key role in one of the great recent advances in government transparency in this town—getting the court’s criminal case docket online. A close second in best flack goes to Phyllis Jones, the Department of Mental Health’s talking head. Jones can break down even the thorniest issue with a smile. She actually likes answering reporters’ calls. “Where have you been?” she’ll ask. “How are you? I haven’t heard from you in three days.” The city can be a cold place, especially on the topic of mental illness. Jones brings some needed warmth and passion to the issues.
