For several years, Robert Triolo has been shooting free throws at Stead Park in Dupont Circle. He’s there every day the weather’s passable and most days when it’s not. He shoots thousands of shots per session and takes breaks only to record his makes and misses on scraps of paper that he keeps on a bench near the court. He transposes these stats into notebooks at home each night. He can tell you his shooting percentage for any day, month, or year.
For a cheap (and maybe even deep) lunch, grab a chicken parmesan sandwich on garlic bread at Cafe Luna, adjacent to Stead Park at 1633 P St. NW, walk outside, and nibble at your grub while watching Triolo. His form is unorthodox, and his pace slow, but Triolo’s serene relentlessness is beautiful, and damn if he doesn’t make you think about what you’re doing with your life.
