The Washington Post

When it comes to naming blogs, the region’s dominant daily has done a fine job of mining the “Post” name: There’s PostGlobal on international affairs, Post Rock on pop music, and Post I.T. on tech news. (Any day now we’re sure to see HardshipPost, dedicated either to foreclosure trends or demoted government employees.) Post Mortem, the paper’s obituary blog, claims more than just a clever name—it has some great insights about how the emotionally touchy business of covering the death beat. Joe Holley writes about anxiously approaching Lady Bird Johnson’s press secretary for an “advancer” (an obit written before the subject’s death); Matt Schudel explains how hard it can be to extract a cause of death from family members (“old age” doesn’t count); Patricia Sullivan smirkingly notes an obit that neglected to mention the subject’s two divorces with the headline, “Which Ex-Wife Called?” Post Mortem isn’t updated as often as it ought to be, but when it is, it usually sheds light on the small details and ironies that make obits sing.
