Best Sign Georgia Avenue Retail Is Hurting

The Joyous Reception to CVS
3642 Georgia Ave. NW, (202) 722-2735
In most neighborhoods around the District, CVS is sort of a retailer of last resort. Sure, they sell stuff you need (cold medicine, toothpaste, Halloween candy), and some other stuff you don’t really need but might want (my wife once bought cheap flip-flops at the Logan Circle location), and they’ll usually fill your prescriptions pretty quickly. But the lines! And the discombobulated shelves! No one would head to a CVS for a big shopping spree. Unless it’s really one of the best shopping options around—which, for Park View and southern Petworth, it just may be. When the new store across from the Georgia Avenue-Petworth Metrorail station opened last summer, there was a gala celebration complete with balloons; local politicos stopped by to take credit; the boosterish Prince of Petworth blog raved. This isn’t the way a neighborhood that’s well-served by retailers behaves when CVS arrives.
