The Dupont Washington Sports Club recently unveiled brand new men’s and women’s locker rooms, complete with wood-paneled lockers, sleek metal sinks, and showers with translucent curtains. But there’s a small problem with the new digs (besides the voyeur-friendly curtains)—the ceilings just aren’t high enough to let the stink out. The effect of this is that from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. or so, the man-funk that rises out of the jockeys of Dupont’s fittest is near unbearable. (Imagine a combination of hot sour dough bread, belly-button lint, and the hint of hinter region.) Enter the Bethesda Washington Sports Club, with its senior-center-style workout machines, children’s swimming classes, and M.C. Escher-inspired floorplan. What the sensitive-nosed exerciser sacrifices in amenities—no walnut-swirled locker doors here—he more than makes back in sensory comfort, as the ceilings in the Bethesda club are several feet higher than at Kalorama, giving workout stank plenty of room to rise above olfactory range.
