Chocolate and vanilla swirl is so passé. I can’t get enough of Doi Moi’s soft-serve in Asian-inspired flavors like pandan (an herbaceous tropical plant), mango, coconut sticky rice, durian, and lychee, now served in mini-waffle cones complete with a waffle cone holder. The flavors rotate weekly and were inspired by the Doi Moi owners’ three-week research trip to Southeast Asia. “It’s kind of whimsical. It’s hard not to like soft-serve. You don’t come across many people who are like, ‘yeah, I’ll pass on that,’” chef Haidar Karoum says. And yes, according to Karoum, most people opt for the swirl.
