For weeks now, I have been chasing the elusive banoffee pie at Adams Morgan’s Sugar Daddy’s Bakery. I’ve heard rumors of its delectability, its almost erotic blending of banana cream and toffee—yet the three times I’ve stopped in, maw dripping expectantly, the shop is sold out. So on a recent Saturday, I set aside my cupcake prejudice and tried Sugar Daddy’s banoffee cupcake. After a couple of laps at its generous, creamy frosting and a demure tongue probe of its gooey, banana-y center, a light bulb went off: If ever there was a dessert to convert even the most dyed-in-the-wool cupcake skeptic, this is the one.
