For some reason, it’s absurdly difficult to find a good bagel in the District, a reality that is bemoaned regularly by locals and newcomers alike. But for the last 26 years, Dupont Circle’s Bagels Etc.—owned continuously by South Korean immigrant Judy Kang—has been there for those seeking starchy satisfaction. The tiny, narrow, ground-level eatery, recently freshened up with fake bouquets and a minty green paint job, processes orders with ruthless efficiency; lines of pajama-clad patrons stretching all the way to the back of the store disappear within minutes. Harsh shouts of “bacon egg and cheese on everything!” clash with soothing classical music playing overhead, which is just the mix of speed and zen that you want after a rough Friday night. The bagels themselves are not incredibly filling. Baked in-house, they’re modestly sized—how bagels used to be before ballooning into the chunky rounds they are today. Packed with cream cheese and lox, these bagels are a great way to start a weekend.
