Best Wine List

Michel Richard’s Citronelle
3000 M St. NW; (202) 625-2150
When sommelier Mark Slater made the surprising decision to leave Citronelle last year, after 12 loyal years at Michel Richard’s side, diners had every reason to think the Georgetown institution might slip a notch with its wine program. It hasn’t. Kathy Morgan, a studious drinker who previously served as sommelier at 2941 and Ristorante Tosca, didn’t feel the need to step right into Slater’s old shoes. She has injected her own personality and taste into constructing Citronelle’s wine list. Morgan is energized by the thought of serving up new experiences beyond the de rigueur French wines, even shattering stereotypes. “Grand Cru Chablis is an amazing value compared to other white Burgundies,” says Morgan, also the winner of Best Sommelier this year, “but it suffers from an unfairly negative perception of its name.” Morgan is doing her part to exalt the Chablis name, much like she continues to exalt the wine program at Citronelle.
