Best Upscale Lunch
110 S. Pitt St., Alexandria; (703) 706-0450
Some pretenders have dared to think they could compete, in terms of sheer value and quality, with Eve’s delightfully named and decadently old-fashioned Lickity Split lunch. But Cathal Armstrong’s lounge special has no peers. Allow me to explain why: It includes alcohol. Or, to be more precise, it can include a Todd Thrasher cocktail or one of his well-selected wines. Diners get to mix and match any two items from the Lickity Split’s three-sectioned menu, which starts with a small number of libations. This isn’t a Mad Men thing, either. It’s an Irish thing. Armstrong’s people just know how to live. And so can you with the chef’s superb Irish BLT with housemade chips or any one of the rotating dishes on the menu. Even better, you can celebrate your birth practically every day of the year with a slice of Eve’s “Birthday Cake.” The lunch is available weekdays only in the lounge, from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Now, if the wait is too long at Eve, cruise over the bridge and check out Proof’s $12 Lunch Crush meal, which is the only other contender worth a mention.
