Best Surprising Beer Menu Part II
1517 Connecticut Ave. NW; (202) 387-1462
When you browse the shelves at Kramerbooks or hit Afterwords Café for a late-night meal, you might not be aware that you’re in the presence of one of the city’s best, if hidden, beer spots. With an impressive 15 taps, bar manager Andrew Conner’s draft list includes a couple crowd pleasers like Stella Artois and Fordham Light Lager (probably a Bud stand-in), a few imports (including Hofbrau Dunkel), and a variety of styles from great American craft breweries like Allagash, Rogue, Smuttynose, Founders, Victory, and Great Divide, all for around $6 a glass. The tiny bar is not a place for groups or revelry, but it’s a comfortable spot for singles and pairs to belly up, choose from some nice beers, and enjoy a quiet conversation. Or some may even try that underrated combo: a beer and a good book.
