Every time you turn around, someone is referring to the District as a “sleepy Southern town.” The sleepy part is tough to swallow ever since the arrival of the BlackBerry. As for the Southern part, well, at least there’s a lot of iced tea to be had. Options for this refreshing beverage break down into four categories: at cafeterias and low-rent spots, where Nestea is available from soda fountains (avoid at all costs); at up-market delis, where gourmet bottled versions, like Honest Tea, rule the coolers (meh); at sit-down restaurants, where diluted, bottomless versions prevail; and at tea- and coffeehouses, where finer specimens are on offer. Teaism, as its name would demand, does the best in terms of variety and quality. The Assam black and Moroccan mint green are both strong and fresh—and not too excessively priced at $1.75 with free refills.
