A vegetarian happy hour is pretty much all about second-best. You make do with second-tier menu items or eat the celery off your girlfriend’s wing plate. But at Science Club, you can eat like a king. The Dupont club’s vegetarian menu offers a break from the sad plate of fries. The club has tofu, non-deep-fried tofu. Its soy sponges are marinated and then thrown on the grill and drizzled with basil sauce. Presented on skewers (just like chicken!) these tasty and well-seasoned apps transcend bar food. The club has also reinvigorated the homemade veggie burger by somehow making one that does not taste like brown paste. It’s clear that the owners actually respect vegetarians. Following not so close behind is Asylum. The dive bar offers passable mock chicken wings. But the reason to keep coming back is its vegan tacos—loaded down with veggies and just spicy enough. At $1.50 a pop, these can easily become a Friday-night staple.
