Best Place to Escape Adams Morgan in Adams Morgan

2315 18th St NW, Washington, DC 20009, (202) 265-9241

As if hoping to avoid the neon glare from the other bars on the main drag, Dan’s Café huddles quietly at the corner of 18th Street and Kalorama. Dan’s appears boarded-up from the outside, save for a small, red notice on the door that reads: OPEN. Most people would peg Dan’s as a dive. I’d call it a throwback. Dan, whoever he is, has been dead for years, but the place has been owned and operated by the same family since 1965. It looks pretty much like a ’60s-era museum piece. A neon Pabst Blue Ribbon sign flickers above the bar, which does not sell PBR. The beer Dan’s does sell, though, is cheap and often frozen; if you’re in the mood for a mixed drink, prepare to make it yourself with a bottle of booze, a soda, and an ice bucket.
