Best Bread in the District

Breadline
1751 Pennsylvania Ave NW, Washington, DC 20006, (202) 822-8900

D.C. is no Berkeley, Calif., where you can’t go a block without stumbling upon an artisanal bakery. While our restaurant chefs are moving in that direction—making their own loaves, buns, rolls, and pastries from fancy starters—there’s still no denying that we have a serious shortage of places for pick-up breads and pastries. Breadline is the exception. The shop’s scrumptious baguettes, berry scones, brioche, and bagels would pass muster with even the snobbiest New Yorker. For those who can never seem to make it downtown before Breadline closes in the afternoon, you now have a second chance to secure this baked gold. Starting in April, you’ll be able to pick up a Breadline loaf at the farmers market at 14th and U Streets NW. The only downside? You’ll miss all the wonderful smells that assault you at the downtown bakery.
