Capital Fringe Festival
607 New York Ave. NW, (202) 737-7230
It’s not quite accurate to call the Capital Fringe Festival a theater event when it encompasses every aspect of performance. Fringe breaks up the monotony of July in D.C. with a mix of semiprofessional storytelling, dance parties, burlesque shows, and new versions of classic plays that appeals to the obscure interests of bureaucrats, artists, and suburbanites alike. When things get really weird—which they inevitably will—just grab a drink or a half-smoke from the on-site bar, strike up a conversation with a modern-day carny, and enjoy the scent of sweat and sawdust. The people-watching alone is worth the cost of admission.
