Best Downtown Book Store

The World Bank InfoShop
701 18th St. NW, (202) 458-4500
From the outside, this store a block from the White House looks like it’s best patronized by people who work at the White House—the display window usually pushes factbooks, studies, and other wonkiana produced by its owners. Inside, though, the World Bank InfoShop is a small and inviting store that encourages casual browsing by readers who aren’t trying to fact-check Namibia’s GDP. Adhering to the World Bank’s international focus, the nonfiction tables mix mass-market history and nonfiction with university-press fare, but the store is especially good with international writers and works in translation, with a wall of fiction that’s both substantive and affordable.
