When the American Dance Institute began presenting small to medium-sized touring companies in 2011, the Rockville venue quickly gained a reputation as the best contemporary dance presenter in the region. That’s still true, but during the 2013-2014 season, the Atlas Performing Arts Center proved there are more troupes to present, and more (carless) audiences who want to see them. The Atlas’ new contemporary series opened with a solo show by South African dancer Gregory Maqoma, who told with his feet a tale of colonial horror accompanied by a vocal quartet and flamenco guitarist. In November, choreographer Jonah Bokaer, a former Merce Cunningham dancer, debuted a quirky collaboration with a visual artist before taking the piece on the road to be performed during Art Basel in Miami. Spring offerings include visits by Camille Brown and Kyle Abraham. The dance series was created by executive director Sam Sweet, who recently announced he’s leaving the Atlas. His successor, one hopes, will keep bringing the world’s best contemporary dance to the District.
