Best TV Show About the Federal City

Recently, nearly every show about the goings-on in the nation’s capital has been trash masquerading as intellectual takes on national politics. Scandal, Homeland, and even House of Cards have their devotees, but those shows are as seamy as daytime soaps. Not so for Veep, HBO’s satire starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Vice President Selina Meyer, a No. 2 hamstrung by her job’s general irrelevance. While the other shows aim for high-minded takes on lawmaking, media, and counterterrorism, only Veep treats our city’s federal interlopers as cruelly as they deserve—as feckless, unproductive buffoons. One possible reason why Veep tops the rest: Those other series come from the minds of Americans. Leave it to a jaded Brit, Armando Iannucci, to truly get this town.
