Best Place to Find a Weird Dance Party on Friday Night

Banana Cafe
500 8th St. SE
If you’re looking for something low-key and a little weird on a Friday night, head to the second floor of Banana Cafe on Barracks Row. A peculiar brew of bachelorette parties, Hill old-timers, Marines, middle-aged ladies out on the town, and minor celebrities (I once saw Paul Wharton there) gather at the kitschy spot for piano covers from Gordon Kent. Inevitably, patrons get out of their seats and onto the small floor to groove to “Roxanne” or “Brick House.” It seems nothing could be more surreal than the unlikely crew dancing under the tropical lights, until you see that Kent is both blind and playing an electric keyboard on top of the piano.
