Best Comics Convention

Small Press Expo
Bethesda North Marriott Hotel and Conference Center, 5701 Marinelli Road, Bethesda
Comic book conventions have become as corporate as the superheroes they lionize: The San Diego Comic-Con is the biggest, with various Comic-Cons and Wizard Worlds in Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Chicago, New York, and elsewhere competing for second place. The District, of course, is not particularly known as a comic book town. But D.C. does have one of the best national conventions, and it’s indie through and through. Since 1994, the two-day Small Press Expo has featured comics writers, cartoonists, and publishers who do their own thing; many of today’s top cartoonists sold photocopied comics to their first big crowds at SPX. And there are big names, too: Will Eisner, Frank Miller, Jeff Smith, Jules Feiffer, and the Hernandez Brothers have attended in past years. People fly across the Atlantic to attend SPX, and it’s in our backyard. This year’s SPX takes place Sept. 10 and 11.
