Best 2009 Hip-Hop Grammy Moment
Best: Watching a Pregnant M.I.A. Rock With Jay-Z, Lil Wayne, Kanye West, and T.I.
2nd Best: Kokayi and Wayna’s nomination
The highlight of the 2009 Grammy telecast was, without a doubt, seeing a ready-to-pop-any-minute M.I.A. performing “Swagga Like Us” with the so-called “Rap Pack.” But for D.C. folks, the best thing about this year’s awards ceremony wasn’t televised—it was the nomination of the District’s own Kokayi and soul singer Wayna in the Best Urban/Alternative Performance category for their remake of Minnie Ripperton’s “Lovin’ You.” Kokayi wasn’t the only DMV native recognized: Raheem DeVaughn got another nod this year for “Customer,” and singer J. Holiday received a nomination for his second album. But the fact that Kokayi and Wayna managed to make it to the big show without major-label backing offered proof that the industry is finally recognizing the artistic excellence on display in this city.
