Best Art Blogger

Isabel Manalo

It’s updated just a few times a month and features no real commenter interaction. Its off-the-shelf template is not exactly Web 2.0 stuff. But artist Isabel Manalo’s Studio Visit blog (studiovisitdcmd.blogspot.com) fills a niche that artists seem to really want, and maybe need, writers to fill. Studio visits are like demos for exhibitions: They allow artists to introduce viewers to ideas in the making, outside the context of a gallery or otherwise official art space. There’s no reason this sort of networking shouldn’t find a larger audience, and now local artists like Bridget Sue Lambert and Ding Ren are enjoying the real and virtual studio tours. It’s a matter-of-fact sort of enterprise, and Manalo isn’t trying to sell the city or her own personality. But in focusing on artists who don’t have gallery representation, she’s launched the city’s first hyperlocal art blog.
