Best of D.C. 2009

Best: Chuck Brown

Second-best: Experience Unlimited

There is only one Godfather of Go-Go: When you rank the standard-bearers of the genre, Chuck Brown will always come out on top. But Experience Unlimited (E.U.) isn’t far behind. Everyone remembers the group’s smattering of hits from the late ’80s and early ’90s: “Taste of Your Love,” “Shake Your Thang,” and, most notably, “Da Butt,” which was featured in Spike Lee’s film School Daze and is listed among Blender’s list of “500 Greatest Songs Since You Were Born.” Although E.U. is now largely off the national radar, it plays regularly at Clinton’s Fishmarket and other spots around the DMV and received raves for its recent performance at the 51st State Inaugural Ball. Its shows are as rollicking and sweaty as ever, and, should you find yourself at one of them, it won’t be hard to figure out what needs to be done. When you get that notion, put your backfield in motion.
